Cold Cast Bronze SculptureGraham Hill

remember Clarks death this would peg the birth of my fascination with motor
racing at mid-1968 aged 9. I would be allowed to stay up late to watch Hill always came across very well on television and seemed very confident and easy in front of the cameras. You could count on some hilarious banter with Jackie Stewart when the two came together on TV. I remember one occasion after the Watkins Glen accident when Stewart drove the Tyrell on stage. As the ear-splitting roar died away there was a tinny whirring sound and Hill rolled on in a motorised wheelchair. It brought the house down. Much is made of Hill not being 'a natural talent' and that he had to work at it. For me this lifts him even higher in the True Hero stakes. He must have driven many of those races at eleven tenths, beyond the point where he felt safe or comfortable. True grit indeed. So in making this sculpture I tried to blend these elements, toughness, determination and a little wry humour around the edges. The sport needs characters like this these days.
