A Hero of the Battle of Britain
Bader played a prominent role in the Battle of Britain in 1940, commanding fighter squadrons defending Britain against German air attacks. His leadership and aggressive tactics helped establish him as one of the Royal Air Force’s most successful fighter aces.
Over the course of his wartime career he was credited with 22 enemy aircraft destroyed, four shared victories and several additional damaged aircraft, making him one of the most accomplished RAF pilots of the war.
In August 1941 he was shot down over occupied France and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner, repeatedly attempting to escape before being held at Colditz Castle until its liberation in 1945.
